Our Michigan Dog Sledding Adventure!
My husband and I have just returned from our Valentine’s Day adventure: we mushed a team of sled dogs! Check one item off the Bucket List! We’ve been trying to do this for a couple of winters now and something always seems to get in the way. But this was our year!
Despite an early morning snow storm, our dog-sledding adventure finally became a reality! It turned out to be a perfect afternoon in central lower Michigan for winter sports: sunny and almost too warm for our parkas.
Lynzie Bacchus at Lady Luck Kennel in Fowler, Michigan was awesome to work with. She taught us how to harness the dogs and rig the sleds and really showed us a great time. She truly loves her dogs and it shows!
Something I’ve dreamed of since I was a little girl, mushing the dogs was all that I imagined and so much more! A little scary at times but very exhilarating. It sounds corny, but you feel very alive and close to nature with those amazing dogs. It’s not as easy as it looks; it’s very physical balancing the sled (a lot like skiing in its own way) and, wow, those dogs are really fast! They are incredible athletes.
So, if you’re looking for something fun and different to do this winter, try mushing a team of sled dogs with Lady Luck Kennel in Fowler, Michigan. And for the perfect after-dog-sledding dinner, we highly recommend Ryan’s Roadhouse in Saint Johns, Michigan. The food was hot and delicious and the huge stone fireplace provided the perfect atmosphere!
We will definitely be doing this again! But for now, we’re glad to be back home, all cuddled up and warm with our very own sled dog at our feet. Best. Day. Ever.
