101 WRIF FM 101.1 Detroit – Goodbye Drew and Mike

I have been a loyal WRIF listener for nearly 40 years, going back to the days of JJ and the Morning Crew, George Swell, and Richard T. Bruiser.  I remember vividly how proud I was to be a member of Detroit Rockers Engaged in the Abolition of Disco and I still have my DREAD Gold Card after all these years.

However, this morning I listened to WRIF for the last time as The Drew and Mike Show permanently signed off of Detroit’s 101.1 FM after 22 years.

For most of my adulthood, Drew and Mike filled my workday mornings with laughter.  The fond memories are far too many to mention but suffice it to say that, after so many years, they feel like family.  The black sheep of the family perhaps, but family just the same.  I’ll never forget meeting Drew and Mike for the first time at the Rod Stewart backup singer auditions, must have been in the mid 1990s, and how open and welcoming they were to me.  That day, they won a fan for life!

I’ll be there, Drew and Mike, when you sign onto the airwaves again — wherever that may be.  Until then, my mornings won’t be the same.

This truly marks the end of an era for Detroit radio.  And for me, well … FM 101.1 is now removed from my radio presets.
